CNC Milling of Plastics

Precision manufacture of complex milled components from unfilled and fibre-reinforced engineering plastics — with high repeatability and consistent machining quality.

Process

What is plastic milling?

In CNC milling, material is removed by rotating tools along precisely defined machining paths — ideal for components with complex contours, pockets, hole patterns, grooves, flat surfaces and free-form geometries.

Milling plastics requires a deep understanding of the material: thermal expansion, stiffness, chip formation and springback vary significantly between polymers and directly influence achievable tolerances. We therefore consider geometry, material, fibre orientation, tolerance requirements and the application environment together.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can DichTech produce milled parts in series production?
Yes. We manufacture prototypes as well as small batches and series. Modern machinery, automated processes and optimised clamping systems make larger quantities economical and process-reliable.
Is CNC milling suitable for fibre-reinforced materials?
Yes — with a tailored machining strategy. Tool selection, machining parameters and clamping technology must be precisely matched to the material and component geometry.
What information is required for an enquiry?
CAD data, drawings, material specification, tolerances, quantities and information on the application. The more precisely requirements are described, the more precisely we can tailor the production process.

CNC Turning of Plastics

Precise, rotationally symmetrical components from engineering plastics — with tool geometry, cutting parameters and clamping tailored to each material.

What is CNC turning of plastic?

CNC turning machines a rotating workpiece with specialised cutting tools to produce precise geometries and functional surfaces. Unlike metals, engineering plastics have lower thermal conductivity, higher thermal expansion and more elastic behaviour — so machining strategy, tool selection and heat management must be adapted to the material.

  • High dimensional accuracy and good surface quality
  • Reproducible manufacturing quality
  • Cost-effective from single parts to series
  • Turning and milling combined in a single setup

Operations

Key process parameters & typical operations

Positive tool geometries, polished cutting surfaces, generous chip clearance and low-vibration, stress-free clamping — plus controlled heat management to minimise thermally induced dimensional change.

External machining

Cylindrical and contour turning of outer surfaces.

Internal machining

Boring, reaming and precise internal fits.

Threads

Internal and external threads, burr-free and sharp-edged.

Grooves & slots

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What tolerances can be achieved in CNC turning of plastics?
Achievable tolerances depend on material, geometry, stock-shape dimensions and machining strategy. Tight tolerance ranges are possible with dimensionally stable engineering plastics; actual accuracy is assessed case by case.
What dimensions are possible for turned parts?
Typical turned parts have an outer diameter of up to approximately 300 mm. Larger semi-finished products or solid components require a customised machining strategy.
Why is material-specific machining important?
Engineering plastics behave differently from metals under temperature and load: thermal expansion, low thermal conductivity and elastic behaviour affect dimensional accuracy and surface quality. An adapted strategy reduces deformation and ensures reproducible quality.

Three material families

One partner across the composite spectrum

Few processors bring fibre reinforced plastics, laminated densified wood and laminated pressboard together under one roof. That breadth lets us match the material to the application rather than to our machinery.

Machinability

Which plastics are easy to machine?

Hard, stiff plastics such as PEEK, PPS and PEI form few burrs and machine with high precision. POM machines well and dimensionally accurately. Tougher, softer materials — PE, PA and especially PTFE — are prone to burr formation and warping and require a tailored process. Fibre-reinforced grades are abrasive and demand adapted tooling: the higher the reinforcement content, the more complex the machining.
